Let's Talk About Music!

Philharmonic musicians play and talk about music, musical instruments and life as a musician in these "Informances" at various libraries in the metro area. Watch for a schedule of upcoming events.

Musical Stories

Philharmonic double bassist, John Schimek has composed music to accompany the reading-aloud of selected books for children. Starting as a partnership with the Children's Center of Bethany to expose medically fragile patients ages birth to 18 years to new musical experiences, the program has expanded to include performances at area Metro Libraries.

Side by Side

The Kirkpatrick Foundation Side by Side Concert program brings together the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and budding young musicians. This spring, high school musicians will audition before a panel of judges.

Those who pass the audition rehearse a major symphonic program, and perform it for the public, sitting side-by-side with their professional counterparts in the Philharmonic. Both the preparation and performance by the full ensemble take place under the direction of the Philharmonic’s music director Joel Levine.

In addition, winners from the Music Olympics competition, are often invited to appear as guest soloist and perform with the Philharmonic (without the young musicians in the orchestra). Many young soloists have made their symphony orchestra debuts on the Side-by-Side concerts such as 2004 Meinders Piano competition winner Jaymes Kirksey.

The 2008-2009 Side-By-Side concert will be held April 15, 2009.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Call 405-TICKETS (842-5387).
